The small print

Privacy
Short version: we don’t know who you are, and we’d like to keep it that way. Here is exactly what the site keeps, where, and why.
In short
- No account and no sign-up. You just play.
- No cookies, no ads and no tracking.
- Your progress is saved in your own browser, not on our servers.
- Clear your browser’s site data and it’s gone for good.
What stays on your device
To remember your game between visits, the site saves a small record in your browser’s local storage. It holds:
- which words you guessed or revealed, for each issue you played;
- the days you finished an issue on its own day, for your streak;
- your translation language and your accent (US or UK);
- whether you browse back issues as covers or on a calendar;
- the site language you picked, if you picked one.
This record never leaves your browser. We can’t see it, and it isn’t linked to you. It also stays on that one browser: another device or browser starts fresh.
What we receive
Nothing about your play. There are no accounts, no analytics and no cookies, so your guesses, streak and settings are never sent to us.
Like any website, the server that delivers the page receives the technical details of each request (your IP address, your browser, the time) so it can send the page back. Our hosting provider may keep these in short-lived logs to run and protect the service. We don’t use them to identify or profile anyone.
The fonts are served from our own site, so loading a page doesn’t contact any other company.
Listening to a word
When you tap the speaker, the word is read aloud by the voice built into your device or browser. The word is handed to that voice, which is run by your browser or operating system under its own privacy terms. Nothing else is shared.
If you write to us
If you email us, we receive your address and your message. We use them only to reply and to fix what you report. We keep them only as long as that takes, and we never add you to a mailing list.
Your choices
- Delete your progress: clear this site’s data in your browser settings. It can’t be recovered afterwards, because we never had a copy.
- Play without saving: use a private window. Progress lasts until you close it.
- Ask about your email: write to us to see or delete anything you sent us.
When this changes
Optional accounts are planned, so you can keep your progress across devices. If we add them, or any analytics, this page will say exactly what changes before it happens, with a new date at the top. Any analytics we add will be cookieless and count visits in total, never follow a person.
